Title: Moderators in games
Post by: Cube on January 15, 2013, 02:20:19 pm
I had an idea that maybe we could have moderators in the servers with access to commands such as kicking people, ending the round etc.

Ive noticed a LOT of people complaining about afk's, stallers, and friendlies.
I think a good solotion would to have someone who is a trusted and steady regular to some kind of moderator to help when the admins arent there or are too busy to help out.

The main person that comes to mind for the Freak Fortress server would be Rin Kaenbyou, but thats just a suggestion

This has bad idea written all over it. If people are afk, stalling, being butt-buddies friendlies, etc then you need to let an Admin know.

If an admin isn't available then get a username, take screenshots, record a demo... aka get evidence of what they're doing (or not doing). Admins can't do anything about it if they don't know about it so you have to help them help you and other users.

If this complaint is specific to the FF2 server, the forum for it would have been a better place to post.

But my response, in a nutshell, is what Shezeu wrote:

The deathrun server does not need moderators or an additional admin presence.

No VoiDeD not just to Freak Fortress I just have been noticing that myself and others are annoyed by the constant problem, and getting an admin isnt so easy when they dont respond. I suppose taking a picture screenshot would work for afk's, but what about stallers?

What servers then?

Note, however, AFKs are automatically dealt with by the afk kicker plugin. As for stallers, record demos. If you're unfamiliar with how to do that, there are countless articles on the subject (https://www.google.com/?q=tf2+record+demo).

The problem with a moderation system is that it is easily abused. What's to stop the mods from abusing their powers? If people don't report the people causing the problems in the first place then how can we expect them to report the mods.

Other servers have set up mod systems and they just generally lead to chaos. Rather than deal with all that, we just pick people we know and trust to help us administrate.

Also, it really isn't that hard to report people. All you have to do is message an admin or even just say admin in chat. We follow in-game chat through our irc system and can monitor the game while not currently on TF2.

But even in the end if we did have moderators that were good, they still might not be around all the time.

Just as with the prop-hunt server, we have mods on there but ghosting can still happen.

In the end there is no real solution to being able to take care of every problem as it happens, but we can still punish these people for what they have done.

What about a Kill Timer like in the deathrun? Ive been in the situation where I am denied my crits due to 2 afk players. That would help a little

@Miaumon, with regard to the PH server, you have 2 mods who are good but only one of them plays the server often, but still, not all the time,

I support the idea of mods, but those who can be trusted - plus if you have reasonably frequent admins on servers they can check up on the mods anyway while they play. Personally I don't see mods 'exploiting' to the detriment of others, all I see are punishments given out too quickly without justification i.e. no warnings given before muting etc.

It's up to the admins, but I think it would help the servers especially in providing contact links with admins in case something does go wrong.

hmm i think marshii has a good reason then
(even though i play on ff2 alot i still wont be admin because people hate me and i dont want to do it)
but he still has a point there was a total of 9 afks in one game and 5 friendlies
and dont put people who hate me and will kick me if i join the server and go to demo and do damage

But seriously why are people asking for more admins again, just ask for one in the chat or record a demo/screenshots and post it on the forums.

Bo-Bo, I think you slightly missed my point which was more to do with prevention of mic spamming and breaking rules etc. I'm not sure which server you refer to but I don't think you need an admin for afks and people who are friendly - thats just one small aspect of the game.

Friendly is illegal though.

I don't understand - friendly players on PH dont get yelled at for not killing props :/

In the VSH and FF2 gamemode, there are no "round timers" like in Prophunt. Yea, some friendlies in ph get yelled at sometimes, but the round ends in about a minute and a half to two minutes, whereas VSH and FF2 you can have someone being friendly for the entire 30 minutes of the map if there wasn't a rule against it.

There are, but when only 2 people left the timer starts, would be hard in some cases if there are more than 2 friendlies around.
Still, in some maps the timer and control point doesn't work, making this even more harder
I'm guessing they are in the to-do list tho

Why doesn't this happen in the regular hale servers

playboy is the only map with no timer or cp that works at all
Title: Re: Moderators in games
Post by: Marshii on January 17, 2013, 02:39:13 pm
Ooh, I see now.

Well what I can suggest is compiling info of how long an average round lasts for and putting a timer around the same time so that each round should finish roughly at the same time as they had always done, regardless of friendlies.

You need to play VSH or FF2 to understand that an "average round" in hale  means. The hale can just sit and wait if a . A legit round can be anywhere from 3 minutes to 10 minutes.

If there were to be a Mod system in games, I think that the best way to do it would be to have a thread in the forums where people can suggest names, then in game have a voting plug in to figure out who (which *insert number here*) would become moderators - that way you'd get those desired by the people who play on the server. Again, I doubt this would happen though regardless of its potential uses.

If there was a moderator system, the first one I would nominate would be baby hitler.
We don't need a moderator system, in a sense, you're already moderators. If someone's causing trouble, then report them and record a demo.
