Title: Server Relocation (Fully completed!)
Post by: VoiDeD on September 22, 2014, 12:20:13 am
Just wanted to take some time to write out an announcement about some of our future plans regarding the servers and to allow you guys to provide some input on this.

Our current plans for the somewhat foreseeable future are to relocate our servers to a new hosting provider.

The primary reason for this decision: I'm frankly getting annoyed by the poor condition of our current host's networking situation. We've been with our current host for perhaps 3-4 years (this predates the formation of this TF2 community as well) and, for the most part, we've been satisfied with what we were paying for. As of late, however, it's become clear that our current host simply doesn't have the capacity to withstand the occasional DDoS attack and their network (and the networks they peer with) has become detrimental and less ideal to hosting game servers like ours.

So, here's the upside:

1. We're going to be buying brand new beefy hardware. This should translate into more server capacity, and we can think about expanding our servers to run more gamemodes (surf, slender, etc) in the future. It's hard to tell just how many more servers we'll be able to run just yet, but once we're situated at our new host we'll be able to see.
2. We're going to be on a better network that should alleviate some of the complaints we all share about random ping (300+) spikes that last hours on end for only certain groups of players.

And here's the downside:

Our server is currently located in Dallas, Texas which places it roughly in the center of the United States networking-wise. Our new server is going to be located near Montreal, Canada; namely in Beauharnois. This means that, due to the laws of physics and the wonderful limit to the speed of light, some players located on the west coast will inevitably have a higher ping to the new location.

It (hopefully) won't be too bad for the majority of our players, and after some spot checking with a few people located in California they reported only getting 30ms over what they currently get. One reason for this is due to our new host's US network (http://www.ovh.com/us/images/news/bhs_network/bhs_network_1_en.png). If you live near one of the cities marked as a "Point of Presence" you should generally get favorable latency. If not, your latency may be higher.

If you're curious about how your ping will be (and I know I definitely am), please use this speedtest site (http://ipv4.bhs.proof.ovh.net/) and post what kind of ping you're getting compared to what you currently get when on our servers right now and the general location where you live.

The time frame for all of this is roughly during the second week of October, as that's the time of our current billing cycle and we'll want to ensure we have a full month to evaluate the move and not have to pay for more months of extra hosting than we need to. Since we'll inherently be paying for another server during the move, that time would be ideal if anyone is looking to donate and support us (http://saxtonhell.com/Home/Donate).

Additionally, another thing that will inherently be changing is that our servers will be getting new IP addresses. If you have our servers favorited, this should hopefully be painless as Steam should automatically update your favorites to include our new IPs.

17 ms - 80 ms from home
steady 70 ms from work.

Modifying cause I'm an idiot. This is Houston, Texas relay.

It's not as optimal as it was when it was located in Dallas, but if it stops the random 300-500 ping nights, I'm all for it.

San Fernando Valley (southern California) - Ping time to current server (tf.saxtonhell.com) is avg. 49ms but with the networking issues of the current host it is often upwards of 150ms on avg. Ping time to OVH's BHS datacenter (ipv4.bhs.proof.ovh.net) is avg. 94ms.

Congrats on admin btw and i do want another MVM server and i got a ping of 52 from Dusty Dickinson,North Dakota with a normal ping of around 60-70

The biggest reason for not having an MvM server is the 6 person limit, 10 if you run the mod. Seems like a bit of a waste when we can get up to 32 on other servers.

52ms is pretty good since anything above 120ms is where latency usually becomes noticeable, but it can vary from connection to connection. What is the ping you usually get to the current server? If you don't know, join any SXH server, open console, type "ping" without the quotation marks, hit enter and post the number that appears next to your name.

Sweet! I get roughly 45-65 ping on this server, and the occasional lagspike that brings me to 150 or so.

The speedtest thingy says my ping will be around 29.

EDIT: I'm from mid-New Jersey.

Then the only difference will be that you (hopefully) won't get random latency spikes like on the current host. You shouldn't notice any difference with 2-9 extra ms response time.

No promises, but I would want MVM to make a return.

Anywho, it looks like for the most part everyone will have fairly ideal latency. If you'll be getting around 100ms or below you should be fine. Above that, and you should be able to play with your cl_interp value to get a better feel.

If anyone does live somewhere around Mexico, it would be nice to know what kind of latency you guys will be getting.

Also if someone is interested in seeing what their true ping to the new server will be, ping this hostname (here's a guide on how to do that, if you're unfamiliar (http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/troubleshooter/ping.html)): vulpix.saxtonhell.com

Tried it with the new pc setup/faster net; steady 53ms (as opposed to the 78-108ms) - seeing as my old setup did 45-57ms true usually, the move is officially negligible delay now.

I'm about 350 miles north of Mexico or 319 miles East of it.

Best person to ask would be "Merio the TacoCat" As he's definitely IN Mexico.

Okay guys and gals, we're doing final prep for our server move. The new dedicated machine is all setup and up and running, and all that's left is transferring all our gamemode content over to the new machine. If things all go smoothly we'll hopefully be fully transitioned and up and running on the new server this weekend.

If you'd like to favorite our new server IPs before they're fully running, these are going to be the new IP addresses:

We did it guys. It is with great happiness that I announce: we Canada now.

Our old servers now have redirect plugins up that should bring everyone into our new servers. For those of you who have us favorited, Steam should pick up the new IPs after a few hours (maybe up to a day).

Some additional downsides of this server move: play time tracking and the sprays website will both not be available for the new servers, unfortunately. We're going to be reworking how all that works. Expect a play time reset sometime in the future.

Additionally, I took the liberty of redoing some of our internal layout and config settings, so things may be slightly weird/off/different (like how many maps are included in map votes, and things like that). If you spot anything that doesn't seem to be behaving as it did before, please let me know!

Don't have a date for that yet. It's going to involve a complete redesign so we can track play time on individual servers along with displaying that to everyone in some fashion.

All that layered on top of the fact that I'm drowning in classwork this semester...

Speaking of tracking playtime, will you include a point tracker that tracks the total amount of points you have scored [Scoreboard wise(Example:I score 84 points on Round A and score 93 on Round B, then close TF2. I would therefore have 177 points and be ranked #4 under another player with 198 points in total), not just the amount of people you've killed as Hale like game tracker does] in FF2 and a separate tracker for SH on the website? http://saxtonhell.com/Home/TopPlayers (http://saxtonhell.com/Home/TopPlayers)

The score tracker on gametracker seems to be unreliable, since it only knows you by your name, not by your steam ID(In other words, doesn't give you your points if you change your name), unlike your top players scoreboard on this website.

If you look at http://stats.saxtonhell.com/ (http://stats.saxtonhell.com/) there is a button for VSH stats faded out with "COMING SOMEDAY™" over it, so presumably something like that was planned but never completed (I also noticed the prophunt server has working stats but no web page). Hopefully once Voided's classes are done for this semester he will have more time to work on stuff like that.

Edit: Apparently jump stats are still a WIP too by the looks of that page (http://stats.saxtonhell.com/Jump)

As for stats for anything else, the jump server's speedrun stats are currently the only thing that's on the horizon.

If you look at http://stats.saxtonhell.com/ (http://stats.saxtonhell.com/) there is a button for VSH stats faded out with "COMING SOMEDAY™" over it, so presumably something like that was planned but never completed

That may actually bring back the regulars whining about the move. Relay killed the video game stars. </BadMusicPun>

I personally haven't been on because I hate the new response time (and the new Borderlands has been out).

I'm chalking up the lower regular turnout to fall game releases right now as I'm guilty of that myself.

I am actually pulling out completely, including my donor status, because of this server move. The first blow to my ping was me moving from a decent sized city to a more rural location, that took my ping from 15ms to 30-40ms. This server move then took my ping all the way up to 70ms. The lowest ping I have seen is 65ms. Before I started looking for this post I was starting to do network diagnostics, rebooting everything, testing my router, all that jazz.

It has been a good run, but I think I must start looking for a new dodgeball server. 70ms ping has resulted in making this gamemode nearly unplayable for me. It took me months to get used to 30ms, 70ms is hurting badly.

U kidding? anything under 100 isn't even bad, elitefag

it's like people complaining their game is running at 60fps instead of 120, theres essentially no difference, then youtube cuts it to 30 anyways

my ping is 15% worse and the server is closer to me than before, think im gonna quit just cuz of that? no

With the move to the new server, I get around 115ms ping up from around 60ms (real ping, not the useless number in the tab list). The added latency doesn't stop me from having fun with others though (because after all, it's only a game, why you have to be mad? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzpndHtdl9A)). I realize everyone's connection is different, but I wanted to mention that the added network stability compared to the old host has actually made playing a whole lot easier now that I don't get random packet loss (I have even have won a few matches where it has come down to me against some of the really good regulars despite the fact that my reflexes are not the best).

Anyways, no one is going to stop you from going elsewhere because you lost a few rounds and are a massive try-hard.

(Edited to correct spelling and how I stated a few things)

I figured I would register to let someone know. It's ping spiking again, went from 80? to 130.

- I use google's dns btw.
- It wasn't just me, one other person had spikes on/off as well.
- It was just the dodgeball server, all the other servers in favorites were fine.

Okay so now we've (mostly) finished transitioning our web server and database over to the new host. The websites should be a little snappier now. If something is broken (like post attachments, avatars, etc) let me know!
