After finally sitting down to figure out the issue behind donators not being able to see their hat paints/unusual effects/etc, I'm happy to announce that this has finally been fixed!

So if you've been holding out from donating because of unusual effects being absolutely broken, fear not, for it now works!

General Discussion / Admin Applications Now Open!

I've checked my calendar, and I'm fairly convinced that enough days have passed since April 1st to make this announcement: we are now accepting admin applications!

Previously, our application process had been fairly simple: we'd observe players and hand pick the individuals we felt that may make good candidates. This time around, however, we're going to be running an experiment. We want you to tell us why you'd make a good admin through our application form.

If you've always dreamed of being a resident rule enforcer here at Saxton Hell, this is the opportunity you've been waiting for.

So how do you apply? Firstly, find some free time. The application process is lengthy and we're looking for detailed responses to the questions in the form. Next, simply visit the application form and follow the instructions carefully.

We'll be reviewing responses to the form and if we feel you're a good enough candidate for being an admin, we'll get in touch with you. What can explicitly disqualify you from becoming an admin? Only one thing: asking about your submitted application.

With all that in mind, best of luck to the applicants!

Saxton Hell / Saxton Hell #2's Eventual Retirement

Hey guys, I want to announce that we'll eventually be retiring the Saxton Hell #2 server.

The reasoning for this is twofold:

1) The popularity of the server has been slowly waning over time, and is introducing a sort of "divide" where players split themselves between the two servers rather than making one server full.

The VSH server landscape has changed from when we originally launched our servers. More and more players are beginning to prefer the Freak Fortress style of having many bosses, or some of the more the heavily modified flavors of VSH rather than the classic feel of the original VSH, and we're adapting to this gradual change.

Don't worry though, we're vested in keeping the original classic style alive and we have no plans to retire VSH #1 for the foreseeable future.


2) Our dedicated server has been in an increasing struggle over CPU cycles. This has been become more and more of an issue as our hardware ages, TF2 updates get released, and we introduce new plugins and update existing plugins with new functionality.

This has become so much of an issue that at a certain time a few weeks ago I reduced the number of available player slots on our other servers slightly (around 2 to 4 slots, depending on the server).

With VSH #2's retirement, we'll be able to increase our player slots again and we'll additionally get some extra performance leeway for our other servers.


I don't have a time frame yet for when we'll retire the server, but when it happens we'll place a redirection system to guide players over to VSH #1.

Hey guys, we're test running a new public mumble server. Right now we're running 50 slots, but we may increase that if it becomes popular.

Server: mumble.saxtonhell.com
Port: default (64738)

This should give everyone a consistent VoIP home, if needed. This also gives everyone the opportunity to hang out with the admin crew.

If you're unfamiliar with what Mumble is, it's a lightweight VoIP client (think teamspeak, ventrillo). You can get it here: http://mumble.sourceforge.net/

General Discussion / New Donator Perk: Killstreak Effects

The thought process: "Hey these new killstreak things look cool. Lets let our donators use 'em!"

And so we did! Now you can totes use the !killstreak command to open up a menu that lets you select preferred killstreak sheen and effect.

Do note -- this is a beta feature so it may either break awfully, or work perfectly. Who knows! Let us know if there's any bugs with it.

PropHunt Hell / Implement Prop Rerolling?

The public version of the PH plugin has added the ability for prop players to reroll and get a new random prop once during setup in a round, if they're unhappy with the first random prop.

So before implementing this, I figured we could run a poll to get people's opinions on this feature. Should we add it?

Submit Ban / How to request a ban

If you believe someone has broken our server rules, this is the forum for you!

Please put separate reports into individual threads. i.e.: don't make one thread for all reports, make a new one every time. If you are reporting an incident involving multiple people, however, feel free to include all the details in one thread.

When reporting, please provide the following information:
  • Player SteamID or Community profile.
  • When and where (which server) the incident occurred.
  • A description of what happened.
  • Tangible proof (demos, screenshots, etc). It must be relevant to the incident. (As an example, a screenshot as proof of micspam isn't helpful).

If you're unfamiliar with how to record a demo, check out this wiki article, or search around on google. There are countless tutorials on the web.

Additionally, if you're providing a demo as evidence, please try to include the output of "status" inside the demo itself. That means: while recording the demo, type "status" in the console. The output of the command will then be recorded within the demo and we'll be able to get player SteamIDs from that.

If you're unfamiliar with what ghostmode is, it's a plugin we run on all our other arena based servers (vsh, dodgeball, etc) that turns you into a ghost when you die so that you have something to do while dead.

General Discussion / Server Downtime Tonight - Work Completed

Hi all!

Just figured I'd make an announcement that we will be performing some server upgrades at around 5AM CDT tonight, and that our TF2 servers will be offline for a brief period of time as we upgrade the CPU on our server.

I'm not entirely sure how long the upgrade process will take, but I'm relatively confident that it shouldn't be longer than an hour.
